Hi Erin, My husband and sons constantly struggle with Disney rain ponchos; they just don't cover them enough. Would you have any suggestions for lightweight, but better coverage rain ponchos? Similarly, a reliable umbrella to carry around for me/mom?

    Hi Kara,

I completely understand your situation. I'm not a fan of ponchos either. I find that rain often sneaks in through the neck hole and I never know what to do with the big wet mess when I'm on the rides. At one point I tried bringing a big sack of $1 discount store ponchos and discarding them frequently, but they didn't prove very effective and it seemed incredibly wasteful.

The solution I've ended up with is a lightweight rain jacket, plus umbrella. LLBean has a variety of light rain coats that compact into a small size. One to look at is the "Trail Model Raincoat" which offers the length of poncho, but is more fitted and less unwieldy. When folded, this is about the size of a book. The jacket is obviously more expensive than a poncho, but you should be able to get many years of wear in Disney and non-Disney situations, whereas the ponchos always seem a little odd if you're not at the parks. I also like to have an umbrella on hand for times when there's just a drizzle. Again, I've found the LLBean umbrellas to be sturdy and compact, but there are many other brands that do this as well.

One thing that's made a big difference for me is carrying a pair of flip flops for myself. I've ruined several pairs of shoes walking in the Disney parks in the rain. Now when it starts to pour, I switch out my shoes for the flip flops and all is well. This also saves you from having to walk around in wet sneakers - ick.

Good luck with your planning. Please let us know what else we can do to help.
