Hi Erin! You mentioned you are visiting over MLK weekend and have visited in Jan before. Have you noticed January to be a popular time for refurbishing the attractions? It seems many are being refurbished in 2009. Looking to visit in Jan, 2010. Thanks!

It can be frustrating when a favorite attraction is not operating during the time of your visit, but the rides do need period maintenance, both to keep them fresh and to keep them safe.

I have noticed that January is a popular time for working on the attractions. They want to have as much as possible open for the Christmas crush, spring break, and summer vacation. That leaves little pockets in the winter and fall when much of the work gets done.

You will find that in January and February, one of the water parks is always down for routine maintenance. (The other one will be open.) Additionally, in years when there is a holiday overlay at the Country Bear Jamboree, that attraction will be out of action for a bit in January. In 2009, there is the unique circumstance of a new president coming into office, so the Hall of Presidents is being upgraded and will be closed during the early part of the year. Past that, you'll find no more than one larger attraction closed at a time per park.

So, while some attractions will likely be out of action during any given January, that wouldn't be enough for me to reschedule my vacation. There are so many wonderful reasons to visit WDW in January that would outweigh the disappointment of missing a ride or two. The January crowds are often low and the weather is mild in Florida.

I've had a great time at WDW during MLK weekend in 2007 and 2008, and have reserved 2009 as well. As soon as I get back, I'll be booking 2010 too.
