LOVED the
Wild Africa Trek. Seriously, I loved it so much that I immediately signed up to do it again with my daughters.
The tour starts near Tusker House where you are fitted with a special vest/harness. You proceed quickly into Africa, where you view the gorillas and meerkats. I took the first tour of the day which allowed our group to have private time in this area. The next stop was through the woods to the side of the hippo enclosure. Here our harnesses were clipped to a safety rail and we stepped right up to the edge of the hippo habitat. A keeper was there feeding the hippos and we were allowed to ask questions. We were about 10 feed directly above the animals.
Then more walking through the woods while our guides taught us words in Swahili. The walking is not particularly strenuous, but you do need to be sure on your feet. We were on rough land, stepping over roots and ducking under branches. The next stop was a series of rope bridges high off the ground, strung over the Kilimanjaro Safari jeep path and directly over the Safari crocodile environment. You are well harnessed while on the bridges, so there is no actual danger from the animals, but again, you have to be steady on your feet to traverse the bridges.
After the crocs, you board a private jeep that goes on the savanna. The jeep makes several lengthy stops, so you have much more opportunity to take photos and observe the animals than you do on the regular Safari ride. Spectacular views. Near the end, you are served a gourmet snack on a private stage-like viewing area in the middle of the savanna.
I don't have enough room here to do the Trek justice. You can get lots more info and photos on Moms Panelist Suzanna's blog - zannaland.com and from an article I wrote for DisneyFoodBlog.com. Search both of these places for "Wild Africa Trek."
I can't wait to experience this again!
