How dramatic an impact has Columbus day had on crowds in your experience? I have seen mixed reviews on the internet - some saying it was as a bad as Christmas (I find that HARD to believe), others that it did not seem to impact at all. . .thoughts? thanks

Columbus Day weekend is NOTHING like Christmas. I was at WDW on that weekend in 2005 and found the crowds to be only moderate. Because it is a holiday, you are likely to get a slightly higher crowd than you might on the weekends on either side, but you will still only have fall-level attendance in the parks. If you look at this list of Frequently Asked Disney Questions, you'll see that Columbus Day is within the lowest crowd category, but Christmas is in the highest crowd category.

I think any travel in October would be fine.
