We have done many cruises before but this our first cruise with Disney and with children. We are going the Disney Dream. We are taking our 3 grandchildren, ages 11, 8 & 7. Could you explain how the kids club works and should we take walkie talkies?

    Ahoy, Kathy!
Congratulations on your first Disney Cruise! What a special vacation you have to look forward to with your grandchildren! The youth programming on Disney Cruise Line is the best I've seen at sea. All three of your grandchildren can participate in the Oceaneer Club and Lab. You can pre-register them online before you sail or wait until embarkation day. Regardless, you will have to stop by the check-in either at the terminal or at the facilities onboard to pick up their "Oceaneer MagicBands." These bands will need to be worn throughout the entire cruise because it's their entrance and exit to and from the clubs. It's also the way the counselors can locate them when you come to pick them up. The youth spaces are open from early morning until late at night with planned programming offered throughout the day. They can enjoy the main activity or choose to do one of many activities available. The price is included in your cruise fare, and there is no additional charge for early or late hours. If they are checked in during meal times (lunch or dinner only), they can eat in the club. This comes in handy if you want to experience an adult-only brunch or dinner at Remy and/or Palo. Self check-in/out is available, so it will be up to you on whether or not to give your grandchildren this privilege. Last time we sailed, eight was the minimum age for self checkout. There are two ways to communicate on the ship-wave phones or via the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app (available for free for Apple or Android devices). The waves phones can be used around the ship for calls and texting. The youth clubs will use these to communicate with you. There are two per stateroom. The app allows you to access everything included in the cruise newsletter including menus, show times, hours of operation and more. The app will also allow you to text other Guests who have an Apple or Android device.
I'm about out of room, Kathy! Please right back if I can assist you further.
    Have a magical day!
