We are going to disneyland and california adventure on sept 21 22 23 24. Are lightening passes necessary as the crowds are usually down? or should be just add each day if busy?

    Hi there, Judy!

Thanks so much for reaching out to planDisney. Fall is one of my favorite times to visit the Disneyland Resort, especially in mid‑September when most kids are back in school!

As a Magic Key holder, I can only purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass after I’ve entered the park each day. Buying it "day-of" has always worked well for me, so you can absolutely wait until you’re inside the parks before deciding. Personally, I usually end up purchasing Lightning Lane Multi Pass because it really does cut down on time spent in lines…which means more time for churros, popcorn, and hunting down all those frightfully fun Halloween treats!

The main risk in waiting is that Lightning Lane Multi Pass could sell out before you enter the park, but in my experience, that’s pretty rare during this time of year. This is why I like visiting in September, as it is after school starts but before many Guests arrive for peak Halloween festivities. Even though Halloween Time officially begins on August 21, 2026, many Guests hold off until October. That gives you a chance to enjoy seasonal favorites like Haunted Mansion Holiday and Guardians of the Galaxy - Monsters After Dark with lighter crowds.

My favorite after‑hours event is Oogie Boogie Bash - A Disney Halloween Party, and it’s currently scheduled during your visit on September 22 and 24, 2026 (dates subject to change). Woo hoo! This event in Disney California Adventure Park is extremely popular and tends to sell out quickly, so if you’re hoping to attend, be ready to grab tickets as soon as they go on sale. Between the immersive treat trails, the delightfully eerie Villains Grove, and the chance to see rare characters in their Halloween best, it’s a night filled with spellbinding surprises! I highly recommend it! Just keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog and Disneyland’s social channels for updates.

Judy, I hope you have a truly spooktacular time at Disneyland! If any other questions creep up, planDisney is always happy to help.
