I am going to Disney World in September. Because there are less people in the parks and because all the kids are back in school, does that mean there are less shows, parades, and fire works? Also, do the parks close earlier?

The parks do close earlier at less busy times of the year. The calendar for September is currently posted HERE. You can see that some days in September the Magic Kingdom does close as early as 7:00 (many of those early closure days also happen to dates of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party). And yes, because there are fewer guests around there are sometimes fewer showings each week of fireworks and parades. I have to tell you though that I have been to WDW at high crowd times and low crowd times, and I would choose to travel during the low crowd time in a heartbeat. You can often get twice as much accomplished in the same amount of time in value season versus peak season. This means that when there is a parade or fireworks show, it is much easier to get there to see it.
