Going to DIsney for the first time with our family in January. We want to visit four parks- which ones would you recommend? Our daughter is 8 and our son will be 5. Also, our son has Down Syndrome. What special allowances are made for children with special

    Hi Cammie,

The Walt Disney World Resort in January always has a special place in my heart. My husband ran his first marathon here and has run many more. The challenge with January is the weather is always a mystery.

There are four major parks - Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. The two water parks - Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon - round out the six parks. Plus there is Downtown Disney to add to the fun!

As for which parks, I would visit each of the four majors. I personally never go swimming unless it is 95 out, so over to you on the water parks. Skip the park hopper option and spend the entire day at each park. I would allow a minimum of one day at each park plus an additional day at Epcot and Magic Kingdom. The key to a successful trip is planning the order of the parks. Epcot should go ahead of Magic Kingdom because it is big and it's magic is hidden.

As for extra pixie dust for guests who need it, Disney does offer a Guest Assistance Card (GAC). These allow special waiting areas and shorter lines.  However, their issuance has become reduced because of all of the technology Disney has implemented for guest. With the use of smart phones and tablets, guests can monitor wait times and adjust on the fly. Guest Services at any major park can help you with this and have a detailed note from your doctor explaining why this would be beneficial to your son.

    Wishing you a magical vacation!
