    How does the Disney Cruise Line handle children with autism?

    Hi Donnell!
    Welcome to the Moms Panel!  I'm so glad you are here!  As someone who has worked with Autistic children on a daily basis, I understand your curiosity of how this issue is handled on a Disney Cruise.  On my previous cruises, I have spoken with the youth activities staff about how they meet the needs of all their little sailors!  Each situation is handled differently depending on the child and one-on-one can't be provided, but Disney Cruise Line does their best to include everyone in the activities planned for their particular age group.  The Youth Activities Manager is the best person to touch base with once you board the ship.  He/she can address your particular situation and figure out the best way for your child to participate in the club & lab.  They are great about giving you an idea of what is planned and which activities children with Autism usually enjoy the most. Every child that is checked in wears a "Mickey Band" that is linked to a computer system that is able to tell the counselors important information about the child and where they are in the club/lab.  This innovative tool insures your child's safety when in the care of the trained Disney Cruise Line youth staff.  Also, when your child is checked in, you will be just a phone call away with the portable cell phones the ship provides every Guest.  The Wave Phones can be used to call and text on the ship and on Castaway Cay.
