Going to Dis in late April and my 4 yr old is scared of characters but will love everything else. Do any of the restaurants that are not "character meals" actually have characters there? We want to avoid them as much as possible.

Only the dining experiences which are designated character meals have characters at them. There are plenty of fun and entertaining restaurants at WDW, even for those folks who might not be ready for face time with Mickey. Here are some ideas:

    - Whispering Canyon Cafe in the Wilderness Lodge. A Wild West theme where the servers are the show. You can expect a hobby horse ride through the dining room and you might want to think twice before asking for ketchup :-)

    - Sci-Fi Dine-In at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The tables are shapes like vintage autos and while you're dining you get to watch brief clips from campy robot movies from the 1950s and 60s.

    - Restaurant Marrakesh in the Morocco pavilion at Epcot. Belly dancers! They'll teach your 4-year-old to dance too -- a classic photo opportunity.

    - Teppan Edo in the Japan pavilion at Epcot. This is hibachi-style Japanese where they cook right on your table. You're sure to see an onion turn into a volcano.

    - Coral Reef in the Seas pavilion at Epcot. An entire wall of the restaurant is a giant aquarium. The fish are the entertainment as you dine.

These are just a few of the restaurants at WDW where there is unique themeing or entertainment, but no characters. I hope you have a wonderful time trying them together.
