Christy,
Yes, Camp Minnie-Mickey is basically about to go away as they make room for some rather notable expansion related to the movie Avatar. That probably won't come to be until around 2016, as it is a major work project.
I am sad it is going away too, as I loved the 'camp' theme of it all. I always wished they had done more there, as it reminded me of my childhood summer camp and scout camp experiences, as well as vintage Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck cartoons. But we must move on!
Word has it that the one remaining attractions of this land, the
Festival of the Lion King, is being relocated to an area in Africa. As for the character greetings, they have already moved, partially.
Recently opened is a new, permanent
greeting area on Discovery Island for Mickey and Minnie. Other of their friends can be found in Dinoland, USA. The still-existing, but soon to go away, character greeting areas in Camp Minnie-Mickey are still hosting a few characters, like Pocahontas and Chip & Dale. My guess is that they will go away soon, and where we can find these, and other characters that have been in this area in the past, remains to be seen.
What I recommend is that you get the
My Disney Experience app for your smartphone. It can tell you what characters are out there, and when, and where. On top of that, we just have to wait and see what Avatarland (or whatever they end up calling it) has in store!
Have a magical vacation!
