Hi, Meghan!
I can certainly empathize with your father's situation as I suffered a serious knee injury just a few weeks before my most recent visit to Walt Disney World Resort in May. I was unable to walk very far without severe pain and also couldn't stand for very long, so I ended up renting an Electric Conveyance Vehicle (ECV). A visit to Walt Disney World Resort requires a certain level of stamina -- there is a lot of ground to cover, particularly at Epcot and Animal Kingdom Park. I can honestly tell you that, if it weren't for the rental scooter, there's no way I would have been able to get around the parks each day. My ECV quickly became my new "BFF"!
Your father may want to consider renting a motorized scooter or manual wheelchair to better enable him to enjoy the parks and avoid prolonged standing during your family's visit. ECVs and wheelchairs can be rented just inside the park entrances or from an outside company. The advantage to renting from an outside vendor is that your father would have access to the ECV or wheelchair outside of the parks as well, if this is something he feels he may need. Otherwise, he can rent either an ECV or wheelchair at the first park your family visits and, if you park hop to another park, he'll just need to present his receipt in order to avoid having to pay an additional rental fee.
