Were coming the first part of November 2013 and I'm handicapped, and will need a scooter to get around, how easy will it be for me to get onto the rides ( I just can't walk for long distances )? How accessible are the parks, restaurants, bathrooms?

    Hi, Robin!

Thanks for visiting the Moms Panel with your question about accessibility in the Walt Disney World theme parks. My husband uses a manual wheelchair, so I'm very familiar with the needs of Guests who have mobility challenges.

Since you are ambulatory, you will not have any difficulty boarding the rides. At the entrance to each theme park you visit, be sure to pick up a Park Guide Map which shows the level of accessibility at each attraction. Walt Disney World restaurants are fully accessible, so no worries there!

As for the restrooms in the parks, they are accessible for Guests such as yourself who are ambulatory and can leave their scooter parked outside. However, for Guests who are non-ambulatory and must transfer directly from their wheelchair, there are separate companion restrooms which are large enough to accommodate a wheelchair and have sufficient turning radius space. Many of the restrooms in the parks have "handicapped" stalls (meaning they have grab bars), but these stalls tend to be long and narrow -- they unfortunately are not wide enough to accommodate even the narrowest manual wheelchair for purposes of transfer.

If you'd like to rent an Electric Conveyance Vehicle (ECV), follow this link for more information on ECV Rentals. You can rent daily at the theme parks and at Downtown Disney or you may prefer to rent for the length of your stay from a local vendor.

Wishing you a magical vacation! Please let us know if we can answer any additional questions as you continue to plan your trip.
