Hello, and welcome back to planDisney, Helen! It sounds like you and your mom are ready to laissez le bon temps roulez, or "let the good times roll!"
I grew up in the Crescent City, so
Disney's Port Orleans Resort - French Quarter is near and dear to my heart, and I was thrilled when it reopened last October. Admittedly, I'm not always a fan of the raucousness of Bourbon Street in real life, but here, the charm of the wrought-iron balconies, cobblestone streets, and gas street lamps exude the charm of New Orleans, but in much calmer surroundings. Plus, there's the bonus of having Mickey-shaped beignets just a few steps from your door (try the Chicory Chocolate Ganache dipping sauce)!
But lest I digress... let's get back to the party! I am happy to report that Mardi Gras is celebrated at Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter each year. Typically, there are both free and paid events at the resort, but Disney has not announced anything official yet. Often, the only way to find out is when you check-in at the resort's front desk. Sometimes, they will give away masks and beads, but the most anticipated event is the Cast Member Golf Cart parade, and in years past, it has started at 10 AM. Princess Tiana may even make an appearance if she's not busy cooking up some gumbo in her kitchen!
Another fun suggestion for some mother/ daughter bonding is participating in the
Painting on de' Bayou class at
Sassagoula Floatworks each Wednesday. Or treat mom to one of my favorite iconic cocktails, the Hurricane, at
Scat Cat's Club (also home to those beignets mentioned above)!
I'm jazzed about your trip, Helen! Have a fun and magical Fat Tuesday!
