We just bought a camper and are planning to stay in FW with our 3 children on our next Disney trip. Are there any loops that are walking distance to the marina or the bus transportation to the parks? How am I most likely to get a spot in the area I want?

    Rose-Ann:

Your first trip to Fort Wilderness will be a memory-maker, but beware: it will become the standard by which you measure all other campgrounds, and, that may be hard to do.

The loops near the marina are called Preferred Loops. They are closer together but if you want a site guaranteed to be near the marina, that's what you'll book. My recommendation is to ask for loop 300 if you want more space, but it's farther away from the marina than loop 100. If you want to spring for a little more money for some extra space, book a Premium site and request Loop 700 or 400 that are just as near the marina. Both are popular loops, though, and you're not guaranteed either. But even if you found yourself in another loop, it's a pleasant bike ride or 10-minute walk to the marina from most of the Premium loops.

None of the loops, except for 1300 or 1700 are as close to the Outpost bus stop as you can get to the marina. But this is a good thing. There is a lovely side walk that leads to the front of the fort, but give yourself a good 10 minutes to walk or just opt to take one of the inside buses out to the Outpost. Another option is to pile your bikes inside your camper.

You're not guaranteed a specific loop, and even though I've requested many loops and even sites in the past, I've found that Disney typically gives groups who want to camp near each priority along with folks who've made their reservation way in advance. If this is your first trip, request what you'd like to be near: the marina or the bus stop, with a water view or a woods view, with lots of space for the children to play or a quiet spot. I've found that Disney does a good job of getting me a spot that meets my broader requests than specific sites or loops. The good news is that if you're not happy with your site once you check-in and there's another site available, Disney is happy to make the change.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
