I have basic dining plan for Sept visit. The website states that for a lunch/dinner sit down meal, appetizers are included only for children 3-9. Is the app considered their meal or is this a typo? I thought they had a special childrens menu for that age

What this means is that if you are on the DIsney Dining Plan, table service lunch and dinner meals include an entree, non-alcoholic beverage and dessert for guests ages 10 and up. For guests ages 3-9, they get an entree (from the children's menu), a beverage, a dessert, PLUS an appetizer (from the children's menu). The children's appetizers are usually something small such as carrots and dip, or a small bowl of soup. The appetizers for the kids are there to keep them busy and take the edge off their hunger while everyone is waiting for their entrees.

The statement you read is simply telling you that children get an appetizer included with the dining plan, but adults don't.  Adults are welcome to order an appetizer, but they will need to pay for this part of their meal out of pocket.
