    This August I'd love to take my son & youngest brother (both 12) to Typhoon Lagoon. I think they'd love Shark Reef but my brother may not get the hang of the snorkel. Does the face mask cover the nose, too, or should I bring nose clips from home? Thank

    I took my girls (ages 8, 8, and 11) to Shark Reef at Typhoon Lagoon for the first time about two months ago. The snorkel masks provided there (disinfected after each use) do cover the eyes and nose. None of my kids could get the hang of the snorkel breathing thing. (And the nose-covering mask made one of them feel claustrophobic.) They ended up going through the shark tank with regular eyes-only swim googles that we had with us. The kids were able to see the fish just fine with these. When they needed to breathe, they would stick their faces out of the water for a second and then duck back down to see the sea life. If you felt comfortable keeping your eyes open in the water, then you really wouldn't need any sort of equipment at all.

    My husband and my children LOVED Shark Reef and went back through several times. It is a unique and amazing way to get introduced to the wonders of the deep in a controlled setting.

    OK, Erin's true confessions time: I went through Shark Reef once and thought I was going to die. Some people have snake phobias, some people have spider phobias, I happen to have a tropical fish phobia. I'm not joking, so you can stop laughing now. I used to have horrifying nightmares that I would turn into a brightly colored fish with goggley eyes and spikey-looking fins. I told you, stop laughing. I hadn't had the nightmare in a while and had gotten mostly OK seeing fish in tanks, so I thought I'd give the up-close-and-personal-with-the-fish-thing a shot. Let me just say that at Shark Reef you really are up-close-and-personal with incredible fish species. So, I'm giving a little warning to all you freaky fish phobics like me out there: Stay away from Shark Reef!
