We are arriving in Orlando at about 11am on a Friday. I'd like to take the kids to MK assuming we get there at 3ish but the park closes at 7 for the MNSSHP - so I have to pay another $250 to attend this. I think this is crazy - is there any way around it

In your case, I would just get the tickets to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. Although the party officially starts at 7:00 p.m. Guest are allowed entrance into the Magic Kingdom using only the party tickets starting at 4:00 p.m. If you go to the Magic Kingdom at 4:00 instead of 3:00, you won't need to purchase any regular theme park admission tickets for that day -- you'll only need the Halloween Party tickets. You could spend that extra hour taking a swim or exploring the amenities at your hotel.

Enjoy your stay at Walt Disney World.
