Anna, read that you are diabetic. I am type1 and my 8yr old dd was just diagnosed with type1 as well. do you have any recommendations? this is our first trip to Dis and we are both on insulin pumps. Excited & scared at the same time. Suggestions p

Hi, Laura!  I am a diabetic, and I think the best advice I can give you with regard to a Walt Disney World vacation is to make sure you notify your physician of your plans.  In some cases, there may be instructions specific to you and your daughter that he would want you to know before you go.

Some insulin pumps need to be removed prior to doing anything like Rock 'n' Roller Coaster or Tower of Terror.  These can be stored at the first aid station at the theme park you are visiting.

Keep track of your diet - it's hard not to over indulge with all of the fabulous food at Walt Disney World, but did you know that you can notify the cast member if you make advanced dining reservations that you are a diabetic?  They usually note it on your reservation, and in some cases, the chef will come out and talk to you about what your needs are, as specified by your physician.  You will almost always find a sugar free dessert available!

I never did an insulin pump, but with all the exercise I do when I'm at Walt Disney World, I was testing my sugars as often as seven times daily so I could adjust my insulin and my diet accordingly.  Again, your doctor is your best resource in terms of what you should be careful of!

I hope your vacation is absolutely fabulous!  I have never felt held back by my diabetes at Walt Disney World!
