Hi, Anna! I'm a new borderline diabetic. Getting used to a different way of eating has been challenging. What restaurants would you recommend? I'm allergic to red tomatoes and legumes. Thanks for being so inspiring.

Hi, Rochelle!  Believe me when I tell you that understanding a diabetic lifestyle gets easier.  You'll come to know what you should and shouldn't eat, and you'll know to avoid the things that will affect your sugars (well, most of the time, because I have to admit to answering this question as I chew a cookie!).

The first thing you want to do is check with your doctor to see what he recommends in terms of your diet.  Since you are borderline diabetic, you probably don't check your sugars often, if at all.  Just keep in mind that exercise can lower them, so watch your meds!

I know for myself, pasta is not my friend.  Since red tomatoes are not your friend, I'd skip restaurants offering primarily Italian foods, like Via Napoli; Tutto Italia; Mama Melrose; and Tony's Town Square.  They will all have something on the menu you can eat, but I usually skip those restaurants just to be safe.

Le Cellier and the Yachtsman Steakhouse are good options for delicious steak dinners, I also like the Wave and the Flying Fish for great protein based meals.

Any restaurant you go to will be able to help sort out your dietary requirements.  When you make your dining reservations, just note on the reservation that you have specific dietary needs, and they really do try to make you a meal that you can enjoy.  You'll even find sugar free desserts!

I wish you good health and a wonderful vacation!
