Agent found us (2 adults, kids 11, 8, 6) family suite at ASM with DDP & hopper pass for 5 nights. Could save $500 staying off site & carry cash for food. Is staying on site worth it even if in value resort? Cannot afford moderate. Will have car. T

Hi, Theresa!  I have stayed off property many times, and still had a wonderful, magical Disney experience.  I do love staying on Disney property, though, and let me give you a few things to consider that may have you doing some recalculations.

You'll have a car, but if you are staying off property, you will have to factor in the cost to park your car at the theme parks.  On my last visit, it was $12 per day to park, and that adds up quickly over the course of a week long vacation!  Staying on Disney property, your parking will be free, plus you have the option to use Disney transportation, which can help you save on gas, time, and hassle.

Walt Disney World resort guests get Extra Magic Hours!  This may not make a dollars and cents difference, but especially traveling with three children, as I do, it can really make a difference in your day to have an extra hour in the morning or up to three hours extra each night.  It has allowed us to visit something we might have missed due to time constraints if we did not have the Extra Magic Hours.  Plus it's darn fun to tell your kids that even though the park is "closing", they get to stay an extra couple of hours!

Lastly, in the All Star family suite, you will have a small kitchenette.  For a family of five, I can tell you from experience that the savings in having the ability to throw together breakfast and snacks can be significant.  I always keep the mini-fridge stocked with water, juice boxes, yogurt, and milk; and the microwave allows me to make hot cereal or warm breakfast pastries in the morning.

So add in all the extra costs and amenities, and it may end up being worth it to spend the extra money to stay at the Disney World resorts!
