We have ADR for our trip in Sept for 3 people. My parents are considering coming down as a surprise for son's bday but will not know until closer to that date. How difficult will it be to change ADR from 3 guests to 5?

Hey Mary!  That's a great question!  What a great surprise that would be for your son to have his grandparents surprise him in the "Happiest Place on Earth!"  My recommendation would be to go ahead and add your parents to the Advanced Dining Reservation now. I would call Disney Dining directly at (407) WDW-DINE to modify your Advanced Dining Reservation. If your parents do not get to make it, it is very easy to modify your Advanced Dining Reservation by decreasing the number in your party; whereas, increasing the party size at the last minute would be very difficult and depending on the restaurant may not be possible. If you will be dining at a restaurant that requires a credit card for deposit, just make sure to call Disney Dining at (407) WDW-DINE within the cancellation period for that particular restaurant so that you do not forfeit the deposit for the additional two guests. I hope this information helps!  Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions that you may have. Sending pixie dust your way that your son's birthday celebration is Magical and that your parents are able to be there for his big day!
    Happy Planning,
