I have a 7 1/2 year old daughter who loved Runaway Train last time we visited (she was turning 6 at the time). We were sad to read it is going to be shut down during our next trip (1/12 through 1/16). What ride would be the best replacement for this one?

Welcome to the Moms Panel Jennifer!

Its a shame that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed during your trip. It is one of our favorites. My 6 year old decided this past summer that he was ready for Space Mountain. That might be a good replacement for your daughter since she will be older this trip. To get my son ready for Space Mountain, I told him that there aren't any large drops or down hills. The drops are not very steep either. The part that makes Space Mountain a little scary is that it is completely in the dark so you don't know when the drops are coming. The ride does start by climbing a big hill like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad but there are no drops that big so tell her not to panic when you start making the climb. The rockets only reach a top speed of 28 mph but it feels much faster because it is in the dark. Because this ride is in the dark, it makes it more of a thrill ride than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. If she can work up the nerve, Space Mountain is a lot of fun.

Your daughter may even feel up to the challenge of Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It looks much more ominous from the outside than it really is when you're on it. There are parts of it that are in the dark and there is one semi tall drop (you can see it from the outside) but its nowhere near as tall as the climb that you see.

You can find home videos of both of these awesome coasters on YouTube. I have found videos of Space Mountain using a camera that allows you to see the track even though the ride is in the dark.

Wishing you minnie magical memories :-) Allison
