I have a 5 year old child with Autism. He occasionally has problems with loud noise and overstimulation. We usually have him wear headphones and he does just fine. But, for those times when he needs a quiet escape, where can we go in the parks (WDW)?

    Hi Jennifer,

The theme parks at Walt Disney World are such bold and colorful places.  I can certainly understand your son's need for a quiet place to regroup.  There are lovely, quiet places in each of the parks when you need them.  In fact, when my son was five, we found a number of low traffic areas where he could nap in his stroller while we rested.

For instance, in the Magic Kingdom, you can't beat the second floor of the Columbia Harbour House in Liberty Square.  Especially between meal times, you'll find almost no one there.  I don't think many people even realize there is a second floor in this restaurant.  You'll find low lighting and very little noise in this area. The outdoor dining areas of Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe and Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant are other nice places to chill out for awhile.

Epcot is just filled with quiet spots.  There are plenty of benches along World Showcase where few people congregate.  The beautiful gardens within the Canada Pavilion are a favorite place for my family to enjoy some downtime.  We also enjoy the waiting area of the American Adventure in World Showcase as a resting spot.  Similarly, the second floor of the Electric Umbrella restaurant is a little known hideaway where guests can enjoy a quiet moment or two.

My son enjoyed the Boneyard in Disney's Animal Kingdom as a place that he could play quietly.  There are a number of nooks in the Oasis and at the base of the Tree of Life where you can recharge as a family.

Finally, head to Walt Disney: One Man's Dream if you need a low key attraction in Disney's Hollywood Studios.  If your son needs a moment to run around and stretch his legs, the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Playground is a good place to go.  Unless it is mealtime, the ABC Commissary is usually quiet too.

Wishing you and your family a magical vacation!
