Ahoy, Erica!
Welcome aboard the Disney Parks Moms Panel! I booked my son's first Disney Cruise before he was even born, knowing I'd take him to meet Captain Mickey as soon as he was old enough to sail. I had no idea he'd have severe developmental, medical and physical special needs. A couple months before setting sail, I made a call to
Special Services just to ask a few questions. The Special Services Cast Member over the phone could not have been nicer! She not only eased my mind about the different accommodations available for my son, but also put me in contact with the ship's medical team so I could ask them specific questions regarding my son's medical condition in the case of an emergency onboard.
In my opinion, Disney Cruise Line goes out of their way to accommodate children with all sorts of varying abilities! For example, if your son is excited to meet Captain Mickey but isn't able to wait in line, a member of your family is allowed to wait in line while he explores nearby. He can rejoin the family member when it's time to give Captain Mickey a hug! We love attending the "Family Movie Fun Time" in the Buena Vista Theatre! Some lights are kept on and the volume is lowered so kids can giggle, jump or move around the theatre as they like.
I suggest writing down a list of questions or concerns and giving the Special Services Team a call at (407) 566-3602. They will be happy to help in any way! Also, check out
Disney Cruise Line's Information for Guests with an Autism Spectrum Disorder for more information on accommodations that are in place to make your son's Disney Cruise extra magical!
Thank you for stopping by with such an important question, Erica!
