Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel Sonya ~
Great question! I love reading about the history of the parks and the legacy Walt left for others to enjoy.
The Magic Kingdom ("the most magical place on Earth") opened on October 1, 1971. At that time, the Walt Disney World Resort consisted of the Magic Kingdom, the Contemporary Resort Hotel, the Polynesian Village, Fort Wilderness and the Palm and Magnolia golf courses.
EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow) was the next theme park to open on October 1, 1982.
Disney-MGM Studios opened May 1, 1989. It became Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2008.
Typhoon Lagoon opened June 1, 1989.
Blizzard Beach opened April 1, 1995.
Disney's Animal Kingdom was the fourth theme park to open on April 22, 1998 (Earth Day).
Today, in addition to the theme parks and water parks, Walt Disney World is home to over 30 different Resort Hotels, Downtown Disney (which is being transformed into Disney Springs with expected completion in 2016), ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Disney's BoardWalk, championship golf courses, and tons of other exciting recreational options for Guests. Things change quickly at Disney World so be sure to keep an eye on the
Disney Parks Blog for all the latest news.
