wondering if there is a special day/week for special needs kids and any discounts. my boys both have autism and i think the parks would be a bit of sensory overload so was wondering about any special days that might be available

    Hi, Rebekah!

Thanks for stopping by the Moms Panel with your question! There are no particular designated days of the week or times for children with special needs to enter the Walt Disney World Resort theme parks. Disney does not offer discounted theme park admission for children with special needs, except children with very serious/terminal illnesses who visit on a special "Make-A-Wish" trip.

I think you're very wise to consider the effect of theme park touring on your boys. The parks are full of magical sights and sounds, but these can absolutely cause sensory overload (even to a child not afflicted with autism). The best advice I can give to guests traveling with children affected by ASD is to get to the parks early, prior to opening. The morning hours are typically when you will find the least crowded conditions and the shortest waits in line. You'll also want to make use of Disney's complimentary FASTPASS service to reduce your time spent waiting in line at the most popular attractions.

I highly recommend taking midday breaks back at your resort for some "downtime" away from the stimulating environment in the parks. You are really the best judge of your children's tolerance levels and abilities -- if after your midday break, you feel that your boys are up for more fun in the parks, then by all means, head back into the parks in the late afternoon or evening. If not, that's okay, too! Instead, you can enjoy some of the more relaxing or low-key activities offered at your resort.

I hope these suggestions help you plan your special "Disney Time" with your boys. Please write back with any other questions you may have. We're here to help!
