Hello, My wife and i are going on our Disney cruise next month (western Caribbean) for our honeymoon. My wife has a passport and i do not. Is it absolutely necessary to have one?anyone have luck or troubles without one? Any input/ guidance would be great!

    Ahoy, Mark!

First of all, let me say congratulations! I can't imagine a better way to celebrate than by sailing the high seas with Captain Mickey and his crew. You'll feel like a VIP as you're pampered from start to finish with personalized customer service. The cast and crew will be on hand to celebrate with you! You and your wife are in for a most magical vacation next month - I'm sure you're counting down the days until departure.

Currently, United States citizens departing from and returning to the same U.S. port are able to present a valid Photo I.D. and certified birth certificate to board the ship and re-enter the country. That being said, passport rules and regulations are always changing. You can get the most up-to-date passport regulations ar www. travel.state.gov .

Because passport rules can change without notice, Disney Cruise Line "strongly recommends" that all guests travel with a valid U.S. Passport. In the event of an emergency (medical emergency,  an emergency stop in a foreign country, a guest returning late to the ship in port) passports would most likely be required for air travel.

With such a short time until your departure date, if you decide to get a passport you would most likely need to have it rushed. Normal turnaround time for a U.S. Passport is six to eight weeks.

Is it absolutely necessary? At this time, the answer is no, and you should be fine to travel with your I.D. and certified birth certificate. Simply for peace of mind, my husband and I got passports a few years ago. Aside from my tragic passport photo, they have come in handy when we travel.

Here's wishing you and your bride a most magical honeymoon with Disney Cruise Line! - Diane W.
