Why would a salt-water pool not be open when in port versus chlorine water?

Hi there, Janice! Thanks for visiting planDisney with your question. Welcome!

It sounds like you are interested in taking advantage of Disney Cruise Line's onboard pools while in port. Disney Cruise Line features freshwater pools that have been treated with chlorine and offer a variety of pools for guests on board. In addition to a traditional pool, you'll find whirlpools, splash areas, slides, and even a water attraction-at-sea on some ships. My favorite area to relax is in the Quiet Cove Pool area, just for adults. These onboard pools are open while the ships are in port.

As to your question, if a ship features a saltwater pool on a "flow-through" system (pumping and filtering ocean water and then dumping it back into the ocean), it would close at port due to public health and pollution laws.

As Disney Cruise Line uses freshwater, you won't have to worry about lost pool time! In fact, you can even pack (or wear) your swimsuit on embarkation day to take advantage of the pools onboard shortly after boarding. My family loves to grab lunch and then hit the pool to start the vacation out with a splash.

If you have more questions for us or want to know more about the specific pools and recreational offerings on your Disney Cruise Line ship, please sail back to us and ask. My planDisney pals and I are here to help however we can!

    Happy Planning,

    Adrianna
