Hi Whitney! You seem to like Fort Wilderness Cabins. We are staying at a Cabin Jan.23-30, 2 adults, 2 grandma's, and a 4 and 6 year old. Question is rental car vs. using taxis? Would you rent a minivan, or use Disney trans/taxis.? (no golf carts) Thanks!

    Jennifer:

Renting a car at Disney is a matter of personal choice, and I don't always recommend it.  You have to consider each family individually.

For your family, I'd strongly consider for several reasons:
    • The most compelling reasons is that you can go to the grocery store on your way from the airport to Fort Wilderness.  One of the biggest reasons families chose a cabin is the ability to fix their own meals--it not only helps with budgeting, but also is a more relaxed atmosphere for many.  You'd pay a hefty wait fee if you relied on taxis on your way from the airport--I don't think I ever recommend them.  The trading posts at the fort are wonderful for basic needs, but not groceries for a comfortable stay.
    • When we stay at the fort, we sometimes tow a car behind our RV.  I like to drive to Epcot, which I think is very easy to drive to, and Disney Hollywood Studios because the parking lot is so close to the entrance.  With smaller children who might need an afternoon break (not to mention the grandmothers), and having a car provides a quick option.
    • When you stay at the cabins, you can park one vehicle.  Having your own transportation to the parks allows you to skip the internal buses at the fort and probably will save you time coming and going to all parks except for the Magic Kingdom.  For it, take the internal buses to the bus stop near Pioneer Hall and walk to the pier and hop on the boat launch.  It's much faster than driving.

    Wishing y'all a magical vacation!

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
