How do wheelchairs work with Disney Transportation if the member of our party only needs it for distances? Are we able to just fold the chair and carry it onto the bus, or does he need to ride in it/be locked down/etc.?

Hello Jason and welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel where it's our absolute pleasure to assist your lovely family with their upcoming trip to the magic and enchantment of Walt Disney World Resort.
In my own past experiences of travelling to Walt Disney World Resort with my late Mother who also required the assistance of a wheelchair to help her gain the most enabled and least fatiguing of Disney experiences I'm more than happy to share that when utilising the wonderful complimentary services of Disney Resort Transportation we always took the opportunity to fold her wheelchair before the helpful Cast Member driver could secure it for transit - meaning we could then sit all together as a family to enjoy the drive to our next Disney destination!  Simply be sure to let your driver know your family requires assistance prior to boarding and they'll be only too glad to help.
It may be good to know there are many thoughtful Services for Guests with Mobility Disabilities including length of stay and daily Wheelchair Rentals plus Guests with any additional enquiries may also email disability.services@disneyparks.com prior to visiting Walt Disney World Resort.
Wishing your family an extra magical visit filled to the brim with pixie dusted moments of joy!
