We've sailed several times with DCL on closed loop cruises using passport cards, but have booked our first Panama Canal cruise. Are passport books required?

    Ahoy, Jill!
Congratulations on booking a Panama Canal cruise - what a cool experience! Definitely on my "cruise bucket list".

I've checked to see what the most up-to-date information is regarding Passport and Travel Documentation for your sailing. Here's what I found on DisneyCruise.com:

"The following guidelines are based on government regulations, which are subject to change at any time. It is your responsibility to check with your travel agent, government agency, embassy or consulate to ensure that your have all the proper documentation to board the ship and enter each of the countries on the ship's itinerary. Guests without proper documentation will be denied boarding.

Required Documents for U.S. Citizens: All Guests claiming U.S. Citizenship, including children, must provide a valid U.S. Passport."

My husband and I got passports a few years ago, and aside from the awful passport photo I have to live with for ten years, I'm happy we made the choice to get them. It makes it so easy to book cruise travel, without the worry that government regulations could suddenly change!

You can visit the U.S. State Department's website at travel.state.gov for more information about how to obtain a U.S. Passport.

I hope this helps! Thanks for visiting the Moms Panel - please come back if you have any further questions. - Diane W.
