Hello, Mary-Jo!
You are going to absolutely love the
Dining Plan in Walt Disney World!
There is generally no substituting items from one category to another on the Dining Plan; however, certain restaurants list entrees which are similar to appetizers. For example, at Animal Kingdom's Yak and Yeti Restaurant, order the Tempura Shrimp. Try the Tribal Tacos at T-REX, A Prehistoric Family Adventure (at Downtown Disney) or delicious Camarones a la Diabla (roasted shrimp) at Epcot's
San Angel Inn (in the Mexico Pavilion). Go to my favorite unofficial site, allears.net, to take a look at any menu which is not posted on Disney's website for ideas.
Some restaurants offer a three-course meal (on the Dining Plan) that
includes an appetizer. Restaurants which offer such a menu include Chefs de France (Epcot's France Pavilion) and Le Cellier (lunch=1 TS entitlement). Menus are subject to change, so contact Disney Dining at (407) WDW-DINE and ask about menu choices at the time of your booking.
If you can book a
Fantasmic! Meal Experience at
Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano using your Dining Plan, each of you get to order an appetizer in addition to your entrees and desserts!
Lastly, you can always ask your server if there is a way to select an entree version of an appetizer. From time to time, we've been able to make minor changes in order to keep a particular diner happy. It couldn't hurt to ask! :-)
Send more questions as you think of them; we love to help!
