We are going to WDW the last week in June with our 9 year old daughter & 5 year old son. My son wants to ride the Dinosaur ride at Epcot. I have heard mixed reviews on the scariness of the ride. What is your opinion?

Hello Cristi!   The first word that comes to mind when I think of this attraction is the word "LOUD".  The Dinosaur attraction at Animal Kingdom is a VERY loud ride.  I always seem cover my ears no matter how many times I tell myself that I will not cover them. On the other hand, my children and my husband seem to have no problem with the noise level.  The dinosaurs are so life-like and, to any dinosaur lover, this will be the perfect opportunity to come face-to-face with these walking giants of the past.   I have been on the ride many times, but I still find myself jumping as dinosaurs surprise you at every turn.  Once again, this is exactly what pulls my husband and children to this ride every time we are at Animal Kingdom. Dinosaur is a very bumpy ride that will take you through the age of the dinosaurs, so you will have many surprises coming at you from every angle.  It is fun, neat, breathtaking and full of, well, dinosaurs!   I think I finally kept my eyes open after my 5th time on the ride.  The first time was scary due to the "unexpected".   My boys do not think it is scary anymore, but I still do!
My sons are "dino" lovers and they are fascinated with Dinosaur, but I did hold off for sometime for one of my boys.  I hope I have given you a better picture of what to expect.  I always tell my panel guests that you know your children and what they are able to handle.  My advice and opinion is to speak with them at length about what they should expect from this ride and for you to decide, as a family, if they are ready to experience this attraction or wait for another future visit.   I hope my words can help you visualize what to expect.  Thanks for your question and have a magical day!
