Visiting in 3 weeks with autistic child. What resources are available for special needs families?

To all who come to this happy place: Welcome!” Natasha, those are the words of Walt Disney himself at the dedication of Disneyland Park. And it's still true today at all Disney locations. So let's get your question answered so that your family feels as welcome as can be.

The Walt Disney World Resort is one of the most accommodating places. You can find a very comprehensive Accessibility Planning and Recommendations guide on the website, which details many of the available services and accommodations. You will also want to look into the Disability Access Service (DAS) to see if your family qualifies. You can request a live video chat to meet with a Cast Member to determine eligibility up to 60 days in advance, so since you're three weeks out, I'd go ahead and do it. If your party qualifies, the DAS Guest and up to 3 additional party members (for a total of 4 people) can request return times for select attractions that match the standby wait and allow you to wait elsewhere.

Having worked with many students with autism, I know that, just like everyone else, every individual has their own set of needs. When families are asking me about tips and tricks, I always tell them that knowing their child is their superpower. If your child is sensitive to loud noises, bring the noise-canceling headphones that you have from home. If they have difficulty with the unexpected and transitions, show them ride attraction videos online beforehand and let them see your schedule on the My Disney Experience mobile app. If they are more at ease using a device to help pass the time while waiting, make sure it's charged up and ready for them. Disney World is a magical place, and while we are all likely in a very good mood when we're there and treat ourselves to things we don't normally do every day, we are still ourselves when there. We like the things we like, we feel the way we feel, and so it's important to tend to our needs and the needs of our children in similar ways as we'd do at home whenever possible. It just makes everything go smoother.

Natasha, best wishes for a great vacation. If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

    To the young at heart,
    Matt
