We are visiting the 2nd week of May and plan to spend Mother's Day as a day outside of the parks mid-trip to give our 3-yr-old (and us!) a day to regroup. We're doing brunch at Chef Mickey's but are looking for other fun activities that day. Any ideas?

    Hi, Casey!

That's a great idea to dedicate a day to activities outside of the parks!  In fact, my family has been on a couple of week-long WDW vacations where we just did activities outside of the parks...we never step foot in a theme park.  Can you believe it?  Here are just a few ideas you may want to consider:

    • A monorail shopping trip...take the resort monorail from the Contemporary, to the Polynesian and finally to the Grand Floridian for resort boutique shopping. Take in tea time at the GF.
    • A spa experience at the GF...world-class spa and health club provides a relaxing time for mom while someone takes the little one to play on the beach or out on a boat.
    • A day by the pool...enjoy time together by your resort pool after brunch and then end your day with a cruise ending with a spectacular view of a park's fireworks' display.  You can book a specialty cruise by calling 407-WDW-PLAY.
    • Then, there's a world of recreation including golf, tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, table tennis and miniature golf.
    • Downtown Disney is one of my favorite places away from the parks with unique experiences such as Characters in Flight, Cirque du Soliel and DisneyQuest.
    • Lastly, after Chef Mickey's, take a boat to the MK and switch to one for Wilderness Lodge/Fort Wilderness.  If you've never experienced the "Fort," you can take a wagon or carriage ride; pet or ride the ponies and maybe even stay long enough for a Chip n' Dale Campfire Sing-A-Long or an early reservation for the Hoop-Dee-Doo.
Are you tired yet from the ideas for your day off?  As you can see, a whole other "World" awaits outside the gates of the parks.  You can make it as busy or as relaxing as you'd like -- and you can splurge or be quite frugal with your resources.  Whatever you decide, have a wonderful day and a magical vacation!
