We will be visiting WDW for the first time in December with our 11 year old autistic son. Do you think he will enjoy the experience? Are there any special privileges he can receive since he is a special needs child? I am worried about the long lines.

Hi. There are many children (and adults) on the autism spectrum who have very successful trips to WDW. In general, Disney does and exceptional job of accommodating guests who have a wide variety of special needs. Without knowing your son or his particular situation, it is difficult to make specific recommendations for him. What I can do it point you to some resources that will help you plan your trip.

First, there is an excellent book called PassPorter's Open Mouse for Walt Disney World and the Disney Cruise Line. This book is available at most major bookstores and on It is a comprehensive guide to visiting Disney World with special needs.

I would also go to the website Click on the search button (near the top right) and search on the word "autism." You will find several articles here from other Disney guests with autistic children. You will likely get many helpful tips from the experience of others.

There is a Guest Assistance Pass that can be obtained from the guest services offices at each of the theme parks. If your son's special circumstances are not immediately obvious, it may help to have a brief letter from a doctor at home explaining your situation.

Good luck. I hope you have a wonderful trip.
