We are visiting DW in October with a 5 yr old, 3 yr old, and 1 yr old. Mickey's Halloween Party is $$, and we are wondering whether our young children will appreciate it, and do we have to use a day of our admission ticket if we buy the party ticket

Hi Amanda!  Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is really fun!  There is a special parade, special decorations, special fireworks, and trick-or-treat stops throughout the park.  My boys went when they were 3 and 6, and again when they were 5 and 8. They both really loved it both trips, but it will probably depend on your children's personalities.  It is definitely not a scary event, but there will be a lot of costumes, and that can be frightening to some children.  You should use your best judgement about whether to purchase party tickets for your family.  I don't think you will be disappointed if you go, but I understand that it would be a big investment wasted if your children are scared.
You do not have to use a day's admission from your theme park tickets to go to the party.  The party will begin around 7, and they generally will let party ticket holders into the park around 4 PM.  You should ask a cast member during your trip if that is still true, as it could change from year to year.  However, if you plan to be at a park during that day (including Magic Kingdom) before the party, you will have to use a day of your park admissions.  The party ticket only includes the evening hours at Magic Kingdom Park.  Magic Kingdom will close to everyone that does not have a Halloween Party ticket at 7 PM.
I hope this helps you make your decision.  Keep in mind that your 1 year-old will not have to have a ticket to the party.  Children under age 3 are free.
