Alice from OK Asked Note: This answer was provided prior to the change to planDisney and may still contain references to Disney Parks Moms Panel.

Hi, we are visiting Disneyland for the first time and I’m confused about the Fastpass vs Maxpass. Is the Fastpass not like Disneyworld where you can schedule ahead of time on the app? Why would you get Maxpass?

Hi there, Alice, and thanks for stopping by the Disney Parks Moms Panel! I’m so excited to help guide you through the planning of your first trip to the Happiest Place on Earth!

The Disney FASTPASS service at Disneyland Resort and FastPass+ service at Walt Disney World Resort are very different, so I can understand your confusion! I’ll try to simplify it as much as I can. So, unlike the FastPass+ service at Walt Disney World Resort, where you can make your FastPass+ selections ahead of time, at the Disneyland Resort, you can’t make any FASTPASS selections until you’re actually inside Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park.

So, this is where Disney MaxPass comes in. Disney MaxPass has two big perks – first, it allows you to make digital FASTPASS selections directly from your mobile device using the Disneyland app, which is a big time-saver, especially if you’re park-hopping between both parks (which is easy to do, since they’re a short walk across The Esplanade from each other). It also includes unlimited digital downloads of your Disney PhotoPass photos each day, which is a great way to preserve your magical memories! You can add the Disney MaxPass feature to your tickets ahead of time when you purchase them online, or, you can wait and purchase MaxPass on the Disneyland app on a daily basis, after entering the theme parks.

If you choose not to add MaxPass to your tickets, you can still utilize the FASTPASS system for no additional cost by visiting in-park distribution points near the entrances of select attractions and entertainment at both parks. You would enter your valid theme-park ticket into the FASTPASS machine, and it would generate a reminder with your arrival window on it.

Even if you choose not to purchase MaxPass for your entire group, I recommend adding it to one Guest’s ticket each day to take advantage of the Disney PhotoPass feature.

The Disneyland app is a big handy helper inside the parks! My family enjoys using it to check wait times, find our favorite Characters, mobile order food and drinks, make dining reservations, and utilize MaxPass and PhotoPass.

I hope this helps you understand what MaxPass and FASTPASS are all about at the Disneyland Resort. Please stop by with any additional questions you may have… I’m all EARs!
