We will be visiting Disney for our 1st time in October with a 4year old. We only have 3 and 1/2 days. What parks should we visit?

How fun that you will be experiencing your first trip with your 4 year-old!   With only 3 full days to visit the parks, I think I'd devote one full day to the following:  Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Disney's Hollywood Studios.  With the remaining 1/2 day to visit, you could always use it to get a "sample" of Epcot or decide to return to the one park you all enjoyed the most.

To help with your planning, I'd suggest looking over this page at the WDW site as well as the Magical Beginnings Park Map (over to the right of the page).  This page & map has some great suggestions for traveling with little ones and highlights the must-sees for the younger crowd.  Also on the right side of the page is more information for meeting characters.

With your trip happening in October, Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at the Magic Kingdom may be a fun option for you (however, it does require an additional admission).  We loved trick/treating at WDW and dressing in costume as a family!
