We will be visiting Disney in Jan 2010 with our 2 boys who are 8 and nearly 4. I'm curious about getting to & from restaurants at dinner time. Is it convenient to take Disney buses, or quicker to take a taxi to & from our resort (Bay Lake Tower)?

Hello Wendy!  I personally rely solely on Disney transportation when I vacation at Disney.  Once you get used to the way it operates, it's really quite easy and convenient.  However, you did ask if it's quicker to take a taxi and in some cases that answer would be yes - especially if you are dining at another resort outside of the Magic Kingdom area.

If you are dining at the Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Magic Kingdom or Epcot I would definitely rely on the monorail.  If you are dining at Fort Wilderness or Wilderness Lodge, you can take a boat from the Contemporary marina.  If you are dining at Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom or Downtown Disney, I think the bus is a good solution.

Where you may want to use a taxi (in terms of quicker transportation) is when you dine at another resort (not mentioned above).  There are no buses that go directly from resort to resort.  To get to another resort using Disney Transportation involves transferring buses at a theme park or Downtown Disney which serve as "hubs."

I hope this helps and please let us know if you have any follow up questions!  Diane  :)
