We will be vacationing in Tampa for a week and decided to surprise our boys for one day at MK! We have only ever stayed on property, so don't know how much time to allow to park and still be in time for the rope drop?

    Hi Kenneth!!!

What a surprise for your boys!!  They certainly won't expect a trip to the Magic Kingdom staying all the way in Tampa!!

I would plan for 2 1/2  to 3 hours from when you leave Tampa to be at the Magic Kingdom for a rope drop.  It is approximately an hour and a half from Tampa to the Magic Kingdom.  Once at the Magic Kingdom it will take approximately 15 minutes to park and then another 15 minutes or so to get from your parking area to the Monorail or Ferry Boat at the Transportation and Ticket Center.  From there, the wait can vary to get on the Monorail or Ferry Boat and then you are looking at another 10-15 minute ride depending on which mode of transportation you take.

I always err on the side of caution and I think you would want to do the same here.  I would rather get there 15-30 minutes early for the rope drop than to get there 5 minutes late and miss it.

I hope your boys enjoy their surprise trip!!

    Have a magical vacation!!
