i just upgraded my pass, can i start using it right away or do i have to wait til my old, lower tier expires first ?

Greetings, Yamilette, and welcome to planDisney! You've come to the right place – I'm a Magic Key holder and am happy to help you get this sorted out.

It sounds like you recently renewed your Magic Key pass and upgraded it to a higher pass type. The benefits of the upgraded pass will begin once it becomes active, which is automatically set for the day after the current pass expires. You should, however, be able to make theme park reservations using both your current pass (through its expiration date) and your new pass (starting the next day). Just make sure you select the right pass (current or renewed) when making a reservation, as the available date range will differ depending on which you choose.

When the renewal period began for my daughter's pass, we decided to upgrade it from an Enchant Key to a Believe Key. I did it fairly early (you can renew up to 30 days before the pass expires), so there was a period when both her current pass and renewed pass had windows for dates that I could reserve. The limit on the number of reservations remained independent for each pass (four for the Enchant Key and six for the Believe Key), so I was able to get a head start on reserving dates for the renewed pass.

Now, if you upgraded your Magic Key mid-year to a higher pass type (outside of your renewal window), that should go into effect right away. Remember, with this option, the expiration date of the pass doesn't change, and the cost to upgrade isn't prorated based on the remaining time on the pass. An example would be if you have the Enchant Key and want to pay the difference now to turn it into an Explore Key, which has fewer blockout dates for only a slight difference in cost.

Being a Magic Key holder is so much fun, because you have the distinct pleasure of visiting the Disneyland Resort multiple times during the year. The 70th Anniversary Celebration is winding down, so I hope you have a chance to see Paint the Night and Wondrous Journeys once more – they'll end their current run on August 20, 2026. The spooky fun of Halloween Time will begin the next day.

Yamilette, I hope you have another amazing year of visits to the Disneyland Resort with your Magic Key pass! Please reach out if you think of any other questions – we're always happy to help here at planDisney!
