I understand I can buy the Photopass CD in advance for a cheaper cost, but my question is - do I HAVE to buy the CD to view my pictures? Or can I first view the pictures and then purchase the CD (at regular price) if I am happy with the shots?

Absolutely, Charles!  During your trip, I'd recommend that you take advantage of as many opportunities to have your picture taken by the PhotoPass photographers as possible.  Each time, present your PhotoPass card to have the shots "loaded" to your card.  Once you arrive home, visit the PhotoPass website (as listed on the back of the PhotoPass card) and enter your card number(s).  It will take a moment, but eventually all of your photos assigned to your card(s) will be loaded on the computer screen.  Even if you don't pre-purchase the CD, you will have an opportunity to purchase it upon viewing your photos at home.  As you know, the price will be significantly higher than if you pre-purchase, but the choice is yours.  Don't wait too long to check out those photos, though; they do have an expiration date!

I'm Darcie, and my friends would be the first to tell you that Disney trip planning (especially dining!) is my love language. Of course, the vacations my family enjoys today look much different than they did when our kids were little, but while some of our favorite activities have evolved, Disney destinations still top our travel wish lists.
