Ahoy there, Kristin, Welcome aboard planDisney! Looks like you're just over a month out from your incredible Disney Cruise Line vacation! And judging by your question, you and your crew also have a fun-in-the-sun-filled day at
Disney Castaway Cay to look forward to!
As someone who grew up swimming competitively, I always joke that I don't know how to have fun in a pool or the ocean, so spending time in the snorkeling lagoon and searching for sunken statues is just "mission-driven" enough to scratch the competitive itch while striking a balance as something fun!
In my experience, while the only piece of equipment that is noted to be required is the snorkeling vest, I've seen my share of Guests reminded that they need a mask and snorkel to use the snorkel lagoon. Since the thought of just staring at the lagoon and not being able to be in it because of something like that is so sad, I'd suggest planning on either renting the mask and snorkel through
Port Adventures or packing your own! The advantage is, that if you plan to bring your own snorkel and mask with you, you can make use of the snorkel vests at no charge! Then it's just a quick wade out into the lagoon for an incredible experience!
This is definitely a planDrew-approved approach and a fantastic way to squeeze a bit more magic out of your day at Disney Castaway Cay! I definitely suggest heading to the snorkel lagoon early to take advantage of the best visibility and to work up an appetite for the incredible lunch that awaits at either Cookie's BBQ, Cookies Too, or Serenity Bay Barbecue!
Oh, and if you are planning on running the Castaway Cay 5k, remember that as of your message, it is still being run at your leisure - no need to report for a group start - simply run the course on your own and ask a crew member where to pick up your finisher's medal You can also check the
Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for the location!
I hope that helps you set a course for your incredible day on Disney Castaway Cay, Kristin! Thank you so much for your question, and if any others surface as you finalize your plans, be sure to drop us another line at planDisney!
Until then, may your anchor be tight and your compass true!
Andrew
