Hi! I would like to take my two senior (ages 75/76) parents to WDW in December! I’m having a tough time finding tips for touring the parks with seniors. What are some tips on hotels, transportation and most-importantly, rides?

    Hi Lauren!

Welcome back to the Disney Parks Moms Panel! Thank you for bringing another fabulous question to us!

When traveling with seniors, I primarily consider mobility - at the resort hotel, in the parks, at restaurants and in Disney Springs. When selecting a resort hotel, I choose one with access to the Resort Monorail. And, I carefully review a resort hotel map so that I can request a room close to the main building or monorail access point. In the parks, I make advanced dining reservations and FastPass+ selections in a geographic way that minimizes walking. We might, for example, make an advanced dining reservation for dinner at a restaurant that is close to the park exit so that we can leave right after dining. Or, we dine at the resort hotel after leaving the parks so that we just have to make it to the room after eating.

Know that some rides may be difficult for guests with mobility disabilities to board. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover, Peter Pan's Flight and other attractions have moving platforms that you have to navigate to board the attraction. Be aware that even when moving through a FastPass+ line, the line to the attraction could be a distance so you may want to check with a Cast member at each attraction to get a sense of how far the walk might be. Know that you can also rent a wheelchair or electric conveyance vehicle (ECV) if the walking is too much for one of your guests. Wheelchair Rentals are done on a first-come, first-service basis, so get to the park early to rent!

Remember to keep everyone hydrated with lots of water. We bring our own water bottles, but you can also get complimentary ice water in the parks, just stop by quick-service dining locations to inquire. Be sure to make advanced dining reservations so that you do not have to wait long to get seated at table-service restaurants. My parents have medicine that has to be taken with food, so it is important for me to make sure we have regularly scheduled dining plans when they travel with us and that they have the medicine with them if they need to take it during the day. Also, bring snacks. We always bring granola bars or some other kind of snack that will keep everyone moving throughout the day. When you make those advanced dining reservations, check the park guide map to plan accordingly. We made dinner reservations at Epcot in the Japan pavilion on one trip. Naturally, we were running late coming from the resort hotel, and it took us forever to get to the restaurant even after we were in the park. So now, I make dining reservations near the entrance unless we plan to remain in the park after dining.

Lauren, when traveling to Disney Springs, other resorts and parks, we have also used the Disney Minnie Van™ Service Connected By Lyft or other ride share services with Lyft and Uber. We use these services especially when we are pressed for time. Doing so also saves steps, so you may want to budget for a few of these rides on your trip. Above all else, just take your time and enjoy the moment!

    Magic and memories,
