Two family friends recently booked to join us on a cruise. We have 3 children that are currently 10 years old. When we cruise 1 of the 3 children will be 11 as he turns 11 in November and we are cruising in December. Can they be together at Oceaneers?

Ahoy there, Andrea! Welcome back to planDisney. It looks like you will be immersed in Disney Magic on a Very Merrytime Cruise with family and friends. It really will be the happiest ship that ever sailed.

Disney Cruise Line has so many spaces and programs designed specifically for kids, tweens and teens. As you know, Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab welcome children between the ages of 3 and 10. The 11-year-old would not be able to join the younger kids. But, I do have an option for you to consider.

Edge is a club created with tweens in mind. It is for youth ages 11 to 14. You can, however, stop by Edge and ask about giving your 10-year-olds permission to hang out here. The counselors will ask if you understand how Edge works, are comfortable with the freedoms entrusted to your child here, and if they are mature enough. If there is room, which depends on how many 11 to 14-year-olds are on the ship, you can sign a waiver for your child. Your youth will be given an Edge sticker for their Key to the World Card or a slider if they are using a DisneyBand+. With the sticker or band slider, Edge is a whole new world, just for them!

If you have not had a child in Edge before, the main thing to know is they can come and go as they please. There is no scanning in or out, parental passcodes or messages going to the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app when they leave Edge. With my kids, I was comfortable with this, and actually believed it was a perfect opportunity for them to experience a taste of freedom and responsibility in a safe environment.

    We had rules.

    1. They could leave when they wanted, but they had to text us on the app or go to the stateroom and leave us a message to know where they were headed.
    2. They were free to go to the movies, explore the ship, or get ice cream or food. However, they were not allowed in the water—no pool, no slide, not without us.
We were clear, and they had structure and expectations they could easily follow.

Every parent has their own comfort level and knows their kids best. If you think your kids can handle Edge, they will have an incredible time. When my kids were 10, they enjoyed the activities in Edge, from the games in the club to the activities the counselors lead. The activities were in line with where they were developmentally - kid-friendly fun for youth who are not little kids and still not teenagers.

I hope this information and my experience is helpful to you. If you have any follow-up questions, you can always ask me directly. And we have a whole team of phenomenal folks at planDisney to help you plan for the merriest time on your cruise!

    SEAS the Day!
