Trying to make this trip special since dad will have been deployed almost a year. Is there any way to guarentee a spot to open magic kingdom or grand marshal the afternoon parade for this special trip to welcome daddy home?

    Hi Skye!

Thank you for sending in your question to the Walt Disney World Moms Panel.  Unfortunately, it really comes down to luck with regards to helping to open the Magic Kingdom or being a grand marshall in a parade!  It's basically one of the many magical moments that occur on a daily basis at Walt Disney World, but only for extremely lucky guests.

That said, I do have some recommendations for you with regards to helping to open the Magic Kingdom.  If you want to try to increase your chance of being selected, I've been told that you should arrive about an hour before the park is scheduled to open.  You should be outside the turnstiles on the right and you should engage in conversation with any nearby Disney Cast Members.  Everybody should look energetic and enthusiastic; I've also been told that it helps if everybody wears a matching outfit.  However, keep in mind that these are just suggestions.

Something you can definitely have your dad participate in is the Flag Retreat in the Magic Kingdom.  It is typically held daily at 5pm, but you will want to check a Times Guide upon entering the park.  It's a great ceremony.  You can even inquire at City Hall about having your dad act as the Veteran of the Day during the ceremony; if you want to do that, be sure to head to City Hall first thing upon entering the Magic Kingdom!

I hope this helps!  Write back if you have any more questions!
