Trying to save a bit of $ by staying in a hotel that is not on the monorail. What would be the best hotel choice for easy access to the monorail (but not on the direct line) as we would rather not deal too much with buses? Walking to monorail, perhaps?

Hello Diane!  Although the Contemporary is on the monorail loop, you may want to check out the garden rooms they have available.  They are usually priced less then the rooms located directly in tower, especially if you are able to make a reservation with a discount.  Other nearby options are Wilderness Lodge and Fort Wilderness.  You won't be able to walk to the monorail but you can take a boat to the Contemporary or Magic Kingdom.  If you or a family member is a member of the Armed Forces, you may also want to check out Shades of Green.

Since you mentioned you don't want to deal too much with the buses, you may also want to consider a resort in the Boardwalk area.  You can walk or take a boat taxi to Hollywood Studios and World Showcase.  Once in Epcot, you'll have access to the monorail at the front entrance of Epcot which will bring you to the Transportation and Ticket Center where you can transfer to the monorail headed for Magic Kingdom.  (Note: it is a long walk from the World Showcase entrance to the monorail...I wouldn't necessarily use this method as the sole transportation method when heading to Magic Kingdom.)

I hope this helps...please let us know if you have follow-up questions.  Diane  :)
