Hi! Trying to plan a trip to WDW Jan 2017 and see that it is the same time as Marathon weekend. How much does this effect crowds etc. We usually stay at Pop, is this a host resort? Wondering if it is a bad time to go? Thanks for any advise you can provide

    Hi, Katherine!

I'm Faith, the runDisney Specialist on the Disney Parks Moms Panel, I can help you plan your vacation around a runDisney race event and ensure you still have a magical time.

Crowd levels are expected to be relatively manageable even during this first race event of 2016. You can expect a bit of a surge in attendance on Saturday when overall crowd levels reach a 7 out of 10, but the rest of the weekend's days are estimated to be lower. What will be little more difficult to manage will be theme park transportation on the morning of the half marathon and especially the full marathon on Sunday, January 10th. With road closures and a course that weaves through 26.2 magical miles, getting around on Sunday will take more time than usual. I suggest visiting Magic Kingdom Park on Sunday as this part of the course is on the front end, leaving World Dr. clear and all runners through the park before you arrive for opening.

Disney's Pop Century is a host resort for this weekend. In fact, all Walt Disney World Resort Hotels are host resorts, which helps to even out the running guests throughout all 25+ resorts. In addition, race transportation is located in a designated area away from theme park bus transportation, so you shouldn't be affected in regards to trying to get to your designated park for the day.

I hope this helps, Katherine. You picked a great time to
visit Walt Disney World Resort! It may inspire you to be at a runDisney race weekend soon :) Please let me know if you have any additional questions on how Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend may affect your vacation. I'm here to help.
